The British Fair Trade Association of Shops and Suppliers’ required a contemporary and highly interactive website that was intended to be used by the public and by members. A member login was required for a member profile page featuring images, locality, bio, opening hours, etc. Different members were to have varying levels of access depending on their status within the Association. The site also needed to be informative for the public and help them to shop ethically in their area.
Having various ‘hidden’ parts of the site was a challenge as some members were required to be able to see designated pages whilst others were restricted. The website also needed to be responsive and yet include a high level of functionality. The main challenge was to ensure, with these issues in mind, that the UX remained good on all devices and that it would still be an attractive website for non-members to use.
A basic social network was created to give each member a profile and login. Members were then designated a ‘role’ in the social network which enabled them different levels of access. Lovely big high-quality members’ images were used to ensure that general website visitors would enjoy the experience.
This site has become a well-used hub for BAFTS member resources, a focal point of communication between admin and members and as point of reference for the general public to easily find Fairtrade business in their area and across the country. Individual members are able to edit their own profiles which has significantly reduced the amount of website management duties required from BAFTS’ admin and the social media element of the website means members can communicate with each other in one place and confidentially.
