Cheshire Women’s Institute
The website needed to convey a modern image to attract new younger members; ‘It’s not all jam and Jerusalem’ was the buzz phrase. Individual WIs needed to have access to their own page on the website and be able to edit and add content relating to their own activities. CFWI admin needed to be able to oversee the management of the whole site, add new group pages and be able to offer support and training to new WI groups.
With 200 WI groups in Cheshire we needed to create a system where a representative from each group could manage their own page whilst the rest of the site remained secure. The actual editing process had to be simple and straightforward because we were building a site for people with a very wide range of technological abilities. For the design, the site needed to appeal to, and be usable by, all ladies from 18 to retirement age and beyond.
A classy, clean and sophisticated design was created with a simple and clear navigation system for ease of use. A robust content management system was used to create 200 profiles were set up for individual users who only have access to their own pages. The CFWI admin is able to create users and designate roles and permissions with a simple set up process. We created maintenance and management documents for dissemination to individual groups’ admins for managing their own pages.
This is a very well-used website and attracts around six thousand visits a month. Feedback has been lovely and individual members are finding it easy to manage their own pages without too much support from the CFWI admin. The site has meant that the CFWI can effectively promote the WI in general to younger women and many more groups have their own pages than they did on the previous website. At the last meeting we had, the Federation Chairman, Frances Woollam, presented us with a large stuffed toy frog which is now sitting proudly on our reception desk!
